    • Brighton Beach Huts Print

      £30.00£120.00

In 1789, George III gave royal approval to the new fashion for sea bathing by taking a medicinal dip in the sea at Weymouth, Dorset, from the prototype beach hut. The ‘hut’ was actually a room on wheels with a collapsible hood, which was drawn into the water by a horse. The King was then plunged naked into the sea by burly attendants called dippers. Later, the Victorians popularised the trend. Patrons would hire them by the half-hour, disappearing into them to change into bathing costumes. Horses would then pull them into the sea so they could step discreetly into the water with only their heads visible to onlookers. The bathing machines remained in active use on English beaches until the 1890s, when they began to be parked on the beach. By the 1950s, beach huts were enjoying their heyday and the coast of Britain was ribboned by brightly coloured rows of them.

    • Brighton Brunswick Square Print

      £30.00£120.00

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Brighton had become very fashionable, especially amongst the top tier of British society. The Kemp Town estate there had been a success, and so in 1824 architect Charles Busby entered into an agreement to build houses on land lying at the extreme east of Hove, adjacent to Brighton. Building of the estate began in 1825. The name “Brunswick” was presumably taken from House of Brunswick, a term sometimes used for the House of Hanover, the name of the British royal family at the time. By the late 1940s Brunswick Square itself had become so run-down that the Council was considering wholesale demolition and redevelopment with modern housing.

    • Brighton Daddy Long Legs Card – SALE

      £3.00 £1.50

      END OF LINE SALE!

This blank card features the now-disappeared Daddy Long Legs and is the perfect gift for anyone who loves Brighton history.

Designed and built by Magnus Volk, the ‘pioneer’ or ‘Daddy Long Legs’ as it was popularly known served the Brighton and Rottingdean seashore electric railway between 1896 and 1901. Propulsion was by electric motorand due to regulations then in place, a qualified sea captain was on board at all times, and the car was provided with lifeboats and other safety measures. This was a proposal by Magnus Volk for a railway that ran along on rails underneath the sea for about 50 to 100 yards offshore, from where his existing electric railway finished all the way to Rottingdean, where it was connected to a pier. The tramcar ran on stilts that were about 24 feet above the sea bed.

The railway was fairly short lived. It opened in 1896, but ceased to operate in 1901 when the council were introducing more sea defences along the coast and wanted to build groynes out into the sea. An agreement was reached whereby the track was removed and Magnus was given as compensation an addition to his existing land-based electric railway.

The design is digitally printed on to 300gsm FSC certified card and comes packaged in a recyclable cellophane wallet.

Each card is left blank inside for your own message.
