The Rietveld Schröder House is one of the most important buildings of early modern architecture. Designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964), the house is famous for its bold use of colour, simple geometric shapes, and flexible interior spaces. Built in 1924 in Utrecht, the house became a key example of the architectural ideas of the De Stijl movement.
Gerrit Rietveld originally trained as a furniture maker in his father’s workshop. This background strongly influenced his later work as a designer and architect. Rietveld first became well known for his furniture designs, especially the famous Red and Blue Chair, which reflected the ideas of De Stijl. The movement focused on simplicity, abstraction, and the use of basic colours such as red, blue, and yellow along with black, white, and grey. Artists and designers in De Stijl aimed to create harmony through simple geometric forms and balanced compositions.
The Rietveld Schröder House was designed for Truus Schröder-Schräder who wanted a modern and flexible home for herself and her children. Instead of designing a traditional house with fixed rooms and heavy walls, Rietveld created a building that felt open, light, and adaptable.
