Richard Neutra designed the Kaufmann house using long horizontal lines and simple geometric shapes that reflect modernist principles. The building is made of materials such as glass, steel, stone, and concrete. Large glass walls allow natural light to enter the interior and provide wide views of the desert landscape and surrounding mountains. These windows also help create a strong visual connection between the indoor spaces and the outdoor environment.
Neutra carefully designed overhanging roofs and shaded areas to protect the interior from the strong desert sun. Outdoor terraces and a swimming pool provide cool spaces where people can relax while enjoying the landscape. The layout of the house spreads out across the site, creating a series of connected indoor and outdoor living areas. Inside the house, the spaces are open and comfortable, reflecting Neutra’s belief that architecture should support everyday life. The design emphasises simplicity and clarity while still feeling warm and welcoming.
