The Paper House was built as a private residence. What makes the house unique is its structural system, which uses large cardboard tubes as columns. These tubes, often called paper tubes, are made by tightly rolling layers of recycled paper together to create strong and durable structural elements. Although they are made from paper, they are surprisingly strong and can support significant weight.

In the Paper House, these paper tubes form a circular arrangement that supports the roof and defines the living space. The structure creates an open and simple interior layout, allowing the building to feel light and flexible. The use of paper tubes also makes the construction process relatively simple and efficient. The Paper House also reflects Ban’s interest in combining innovative engineering with elegant architectural design. The structure is both functional and visually striking. The paper tubes create a distinctive rhythm and pattern within the space, while the simple layout allows natural light to enter the building.
One of the key ideas behind Ban’s work is sustainability. By using recycled materials, he reduces the environmental impact of construction. Paper tubes are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to transport, which makes them useful in situations where traditional building materials may be difficult to obtain. Ban later used similar techniques in temporary shelters for people affected by natural disasters around the world.
