The Isokon Flats is a reinforced concrete block of 36 flats designed by Canadian engineer Wells Coates. The building was the brainchild of Jack and Molly Pritchard and Wells Coates, who in 1931 established a design firm producing Modernist architecture and furniture. With simple living spaces strongly influenced by Coates’ Japanese experience, and including built-in Isokon furniture, Isokon was an experiment in collective housing designed for left-wing intellectuals. It became a haven for Continental Europeans escaping Nazi persecution and hosted many famous personages including Agatha Christie, Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy, and Marcel Breuer.
The complex opened as an experiment in minimalist urban living. All of the “Existenzminimum” flats had very small kitchens as there was a communal kitchen for the preparation of meals, connected to the residential floors via a dumbwaiter. Laundry services and shoe-polishing, were provided on site.
The building was designated a Grade I listed structure in 1999. In 2002 is was refurbished by Avanti Architects and a museum designed in the former garage. An English Heritage blue plaque was fixed in 2018 to commemorate the residence of the Bauhaus masters Gropius, Breuer and Moholy-Nagy.
