Frank Lloyd Wright designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and mentoring hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called Organic Architecture, asserting that a structure should look as if it naturally grew from the site. The Prairie style developed by Wright and other architects in the early twentieth century was inspired by the wide, flat landscapes of the American Midwest. Prairie-style buildings often feature strong horizontal lines, low-pitched roofs, wide overhanging eaves, and open interior spaces. These elements help the buildings appear connected to the flat land around them.

The Robie House is one of the best examples of Prairie-style architecture. The house was designed for Frederick C. Robie and his family. Its design emphasises long horizontal forms that seem to stretch across the site. The large cantilevered roofs extend far beyond the walls of the house, creating dramatic overhangs and sheltered outdoor areas.
Inside, instead of separating rooms with many walls, Wright designed the living and dining areas as connected spaces. This open plan allows people to move easily through the house and creates a more flexible living environment. Built-in furniture and carefully designed details help create a unified design throughout the building. The house also includes many decorative elements such as art glass windows, which feature geometric patterns that reflect the Prairie style. These windows allow natural light to enter while maintaining privacy and adding visual interest.
