The Glass House is one of Johnson’s most famous designs. The house looks very simple, but its concept was groundbreaking at the time. It is essentially a rectangular building with walls made almost entirely of glass and supported by thin black steel frames. Because the walls are transparent, the house feels open and connected to the surrounding landscape. Inside the Glass House, the space is mostly open with very few interior walls. The only solid structure inside is a circular brick cylinder placed in the centre, which contains the bathroom and fireplace. The rest of the interior flows together as one continuous space. This open layout, combined with the glass walls, allows the natural surroundings to become part of the living environment.
The Glass House was also part of a larger property where Johnson built several other structures over time, including galleries and guest houses. These buildings allowed him to experiment with different architectural ideas. Today, the Glass House is preserved as a historic site by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It remains an important example of modern architecture and continues to inspire architects and designers around the world.
The house is an example of early use of industrial materials in home design, such as glass and steel. Johnson used the residence for 58 years, shared for 45 years with his long time companion David Whitney, an art critic and curator who helped design the landscaping and collected the art displayed there.
