The Starkey House was designed for a private client who wanted a modern home that could take advantage of its natural surroundings. The building reflects Breuer’s interest in combining modern architecture with the landscape. One of the most striking features of the Starkey House is its bold structure and strong horizontal lines. Like many of Breuer’s houses, parts of the building extend outward in dramatic cantilevered forms. These overhanging sections create a dynamic visual effect while also providing shaded outdoor spaces. The design shows Breuer’s ability to combine engineering innovation with aesthetic design.
The house also uses natural materials such as wood and stone, which help connect the building to its environment. Large windows allow natural light to enter the interior and provide views of the surrounding landscape creating a close relationship between the indoor and the outdoors. Inside, the layout is practical and comfortable, and the interior spaces are open and designed to make efficient use of space while still feeling warm and inviting.
The house demonstrates Breuer’s belief that architecture should be both innovative and responsive to its environment.
