The design of Villa Savoye reflects what Le Corbusier called his “Five Points of Architecture.” First, the pilotis lift the building off the ground, creating open space underneath. Second, the roof is designed as a rooftop garden or terrace, allowing people to enjoy outdoor space above the house. Third, the floor plan is open and flexible because the structure is supported by columns instead of thick walls. Fourth, long horizontal windows allow natural light to enter the building and provide wide views of the surrounding landscape. Finally, the façade is free from structural limits, allowing it to be designed more creatively.
Inside the house, movement through the space is important. Instead of only using stairs, Le Corbusier included a gentle ramp that leads from the ground floor to the upper levels and the rooftop terrace. This creates a smooth architectural experience as people move through the building. Villa Savoye is considered one of the most important buildings in modern architecture. It demonstrates Le Corbusier’s ideas about simplicity, functionality, and modern living. The house has been preserved and is open to visitors as a historic monument. Its innovative design continues to inspire architects and designers, making it a lasting symbol of modern architectural thinking.
