The Walter Gropius house combines traditional New England building materials with modern design elements. For example, the structure uses wood, brick, and stone that were common in the region, but it also includes modern features such as large glass windows, flat surfaces, and an open interior layout.
The design of the house focuses on simplicity and functionality. The building has clean lines and minimal decoration, reflecting the Bauhaus belief that form should follow function. Large windows allow plenty of natural light into the interior and create a strong connection between the indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape.
Inside the house, the layout is practical and comfortable for everyday living. The rooms are designed to make efficient use of space, and many pieces of furniture reflect the modern design style promoted by the Bauhaus. Gropius carefully planned the house so that it would suit the needs of his family while also demonstrating his architectural ideas.
