    • Brighton Beach Huts Sunrise Print

      £30.00£120.00

In 1789, George III gave royal approval to the new fashion for sea bathing by taking a medicinal dip in the sea at Weymouth, Dorset, from the prototype beach hut. The ‘hut’ was actually a room on wheels with a collapsible hood, which was drawn into the water by a horse. The King was then plunged naked into the sea by burly attendants called dippers. Later, the Victorians popularised the trend. Patrons would hire them by the half-hour, disappearing into them to change into bathing costumes. Horses would then pull them into the sea so they could step discreetly into the water with only their heads visible to onlookers. The bathing machines remained in active use on English beaches until the 1890s, when they began to be parked on the beach. By the 1950s, beach huts were enjoying their heyday and the coast of Britain was ribboned by brightly coloured rows of them.

    • Brighton Brunswick Square Print

      £30.00£120.00

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Brighton had become very fashionable, especially amongst the top tier of British society. The Kemp Town estate there had been a success, and so in 1824 architect Charles Busby entered into an agreement to build houses on land lying at the extreme east of Hove, adjacent to Brighton. Building of the estate began in 1825. The name “Brunswick” was presumably taken from House of Brunswick, a term sometimes used for the House of Hanover, the name of the British royal family at the time. By the late 1940s Brunswick Square itself had become so run-down that the Council was considering wholesale demolition and redevelopment with modern housing.

Brunswick Square is a long row of terraced houses facing the sea. In the middle point of this sea-facing terrace was a central square, which stretched back. This square was named Brunswick Square. The terraced houses, in Brunswick Terrace and in Brunswick Square, were built for the upper classes, they were designed as ‘first class’ housing. Beyond these houses were second classes houses in streets such as Waterloo Street.

    • Brighton Daddy Long Legs Print

      £30.00 £15.00

Designed and built by Magnus Volk, the ‘pioneer’ or ‘Daddy Long Legs’ as it was popularly known served the Brighton and Rottingdean seashore electric railway between 1896 and 1901. Propulsion was by electric motorand due to regulations then in place, a qualified sea captain was on board at all times, and the car was provided with lifeboats and other safety measures. This was a proposal by Magnus Volk for a railway that ran along on rails underneath the sea for about 50 to 100 yards offshore, from where his existing electric railway finished all the way to Rottingdean, where it was connected to a pier. The tramcar ran on stilts that were about 24 feet above the sea bed.

The railway was fairly short lived. It opened in 1896, but ceased to operate in 1901 when the council were introducing more sea defences along the coast and wanted to build groynes out into the sea.

    • Glasgow School of Art Print

      £30.00£120.00

The world-renowned Glasgow School of Art is housed in one of Glasgow’s most famous buildings, often considered the masterpiece of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Built between 1897 and 1909, the building is cited by architectural critics as among the finest buildings in the UK. The building is undergoing extensive repair after it was severely damaged by fire in May 2014.
The school is Scotland’s only public self-governing art school offering university-level programmes and research in architecture, fine art and design.

Since the designation of Glasgow as European City of Culture in 1990, Mackintosh’s enduring popularity has been fuelled by further exhibitions and books and memorabilia which have illustrated aspects of his life and work. The revival of public interest has led to the refurbishment and opening of more buildings to the public, such as the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow and 78 Derngate in Northampton.

    • Hill House Night Print

      £30.00£120.00

Brand new prints featuring the most popular Linescapes designs on a Night version background. These prints can be framed in full or cropped square.

The Hill House is a masterpiece on a grand scale. Working to a commission from publishing magnate Walter Blackie, celebrated architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, the artist Margaret Macdonald, created almost everything you see here, from the building itself to the furniture and textiles.

Think early 20th-century Scottish design and you’re bound to conjure up images of Mackintosh’s geometric lines and elegant purity. His creations were exquisitely simple and have become icons of the Glasgow Arts & Crafts movement.

Outside, the beautiful garden has also been restored in line with some of the early designs and reflects the palette of Mackintosh colours.
